Winter storm live updates: Travel disruptions expand as blizzard develops, extreme cold hits south

A massive storm sweeping through much of the United States has prompted cancellations of intercity trains ahead of Christmas.

Amtrak is suspending some trains on several Midwestern and cross-country routes Sunday. The rail company said the actions were “taken out of the utmost caution and in consultation with state transport departments, host country railways, emergency managers and weather forecasters”.

Cancellation of service on long-haul routes originating or terminating in Chicago, including Empire Builder, Cardinal, Capitol Limited, Southwest Chief and Lake Shore Limited.
