the University.Iowa Business School Students Turn Classroom Projects into Donations to Stead Family Children’s Hospital

IOWA CITY, IA (KCRG) – University of Iowa students take a class project and convert it into donations.

A few weeks ago, Eli Anderson and a few of his classmates started a business selling custom mugs. Profits have since turned into hundreds of dollars in donations to UIHC.

“First, our group brought $15. Our professor brought another five,” he told TV-9. “We’ve made about $1,700 so far, of which about $200 will be donated to Stead Family Children’s Hospital.”

They are not the only ones.

Another group of companies selling crocheted bags, coasters and key chains also returned a portion of their profits.

“As we all know, Stead Hospital is one of the biggest things we have here. They definitely need the support of all the kids and families that go there,” Celia Hernandez said.

This is not a requirement of the course, let alone this particular program.

“Every week they have to report on their sales, their costs and their profit margins,” Professor Bob Walker said. “They can do whatever they want with it. It’s their money, and they work hard for it.”

He said the idea was first thought of by some students last year and has since become a smart move for many other students involved.

“Like when they first said it, it restored my faith in humanity. There’s a lot of other things going on with their money, and they decided to give it back to Stead and Children’s Hospital, so that’s really made me happy. Moved,” Walker said.

Last fall, his students donated $4,000 in just one semester.

Hernandez’s group business can be found here. Anderson’s group of companies is developing an Etsy store called “UniCups.”
