This week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” kicks off with Heidi Gardner leading a PBS NewsHour focusing on three prominent Republicans less than two weeks before the midterm elections .
First up is Herschel Walker, played by Kenan Thompson.
“My name is Herschel Walker Texas Rangers,” Thompson, as Walker said, kicked off the NBC Variety show. “I’m running for president of United Airlines.”
Next up: Dr. Mehmet Oz, played by Mikey Day.
“My Pennsylvania Phillies are in the World Series and I just had a delicious Philly cheese and steak. Mmm!” announced Day’s Oz.
Finally: Kari Lake, played by Cecily Strong.
“It was a pleasure to be with you,” she said. “On your sweet little show full of lies.”
Gardner, who hosts PBS NewsHour, noted that despite no political experience, all three have performed well in recent polls.
“That’s where I don’t know,” Thompson’s Walker said when asked why his support was growing. “The whole world is a mystery, isn’t it? A thermos, for example, that keeps hot things warm but also cold things cool. My question is… how is it determined?”
It was followed by why so many Georgians, states where Walker ran for the Senate, supported him despite his many controversies.
“Guests,” he said.
The next question is for Dr. Day. The PBS NewsHour host said Oz had caught up with his Pennsylvania Senate rival John Feltman.
“I’m a long shot,” Dr. Day. Oz said. “But I tell myself that if you’re honest, fair, and if your opponent has a debilitating medical emergency, you can win this election.”
Earlier this year, Feltman suffered a stroke.
Responding to her rise in the polls, Strong Lake called her a “fighter” who returned “more than two thousand salads” in her lifetime.
“And I’m not afraid to do the same with democracy,” she said.
Walker then asks for the next question and starts talking about Pokémon.
Gardner’s PBS host mentioned that Lake has proposed major changes to Arizona’s voting laws.
“If the people of Arizona elect me, I will make sure they never have to vote again,” Strong Lake said.
Thompson’s Walker ended the show with the show’s signature catchphrase “Live…from New York! It’s Saturday night!”
