Alexander, Virginia— Emily M. Dickens, Chief of Staff and Head of Government Affairs, SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), delivered a presentation entitled “A Business Agenda for Action: A Human – A Centre-Centric Approach” at today’s United Nations (UN) General Assembly Global Town Hall. “
Speaking on behalf of SHRM’s more than 300,000 members in 165 countries, Dickens focused on the priorities outlined in the UN report “Our Common Agenda” aimed at fostering a people-centred recovery of the global workforce in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The report mentioned that we are indeed at a turning point in history,” Dickens told a virtual audience of business leaders and UN officials. “I propose to you today that this inflection point has not been touched anywhere else like the workplace – the place where people spend most of their time, the mechanisms that allow people to take care of themselves and their families, the incubators of innovation that impact our lives Quality. This shared agenda offers organizations the opportunity to rethink, rethink, reimagine and reset their workplace culture. All business leaders around the world, big and small, are making decisions that will shape their Whether the organization will collapse or break out.”
Dickens said organizations must focus on creating cultures that provide the best opportunities for all, so no one is left behind in future crises. She also spoke about the importance of placing women and girls at the center of workforce development and building trust between employers and employees to create a resilient workplace.
SHRM, in partnership with the International Organization of Employers (IOE) and the United States Council on International Business (USCIB), also participated in recent discussions on the critical role of business in the multilateral system, workforce development, health and wellness, and human rights.
In addition to Dickens, today’s town hall features newly elected ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo, IOE Secretary-General Roberto Suarez Santos, USCIB President and CEO Peter Robinson and other leaders from the global business community and higher education.
