Seattle Seahawks star safety Jamal Adams expected to miss remainder of NFL season

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams is expected to miss the rest of the NFL season after injuring his quadriceps tendon in the team’s opener, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The Seahawks placed Adams on injury reserve Thursday and signed defensive back Tiz Tabor from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice class to replace him on the 53-man roster.

Adams and the Seahawks think the three-time Pro Bowl tryout is set for a rebound after a disappointing 2021 season in which he went 12 games without being fired. But any chance ended in the second quarter of Seattle’s 17-16 win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night, when Adams was ejected after hurting former teammate Russell Wilson while the Lightning struck.

Coach Pete Carroll called it a “serious” postgame injury and said on Seattle Sports’ 710 AM weekly broadcast Tuesday morning that Adams “has got to do some work on it,” though he didn’t announce Adams’ injury at the time. season is over

NFL Network first reported Thursday that Adams will undergo season-ending surgery.

Adams limped off the field in apparent pain, and after putting pressure on Wilson and hitting Wilson, his left leg was severely affected, which resulted in a third-hit miss. After being examined in a medical tent, he was helped into a sick car. Adams was visibly frustrated, and at one point showed frustration when he was driven into the locker room.

Carroll said the injury was Adams’ quadriceps tendon, which connects the quadriceps to the top of the kneecap.

“The fact that he’s such a heartthrob about the game of football, he loves to play, he can’t handle now ‘how can this keep happening?'” Carroll said on his radio show. “It’s nice that he has his parents in the dressing room during games, when he’s there to help him through, but it’s been really tough. So I want everyone to pass on the love to him.”

Adams made three tackles and defended a pass before the injury. Josh Jones replaced him for the remainder of the game. Seattle also has Ryan Neal as a safety option. Neal started four times in 2020, while Adams was sidelined with a groin injury. Tabor, 26, played safety last season under Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai and is now a defensive lineman for Seattle.

Adams missed just two games in his first three seasons with the New York Jets, but then missed nine games in his first two seasons with the Seahawks — four in 2020 and the final five last season — because he A re-tear of the shoulder labrum requires surgery. Adams missed early in training camp this summer with a fractured left middle finger, another injury he has dealt with in the past. He has had finger surgery the past two offseasons.

Adams and the Seahawks hope Seattle’s new defense — which emphasizes the appearance of a safe split — will put him in a rebounding position. In his stellar 2020 debut season in Seattle, Adams set an NFL record with 9.5 defensive back sacks, earning him his third straight Pro Bowl title. But then came his 2021 sack-free season, which ended with a torn labrum after 12 games.

Adams, speaking for the first time last week, his first since a recent finger injury, said Seattle’s new defense gave him “the ability to play.”

“I’m back to my element, man,” he said. “I feel like I’m back playing defense again.”

The Seahawks acquired Adams from the Jets in 2020, including first-round picks in 2021 and 2022. They signed him to a four-year, $70 million extension last summer, making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL at the time.
