The owner and co-founder of sports drink company Red Bull has passed away, the company announced Saturday.

Dietrich Mateschitz started selling the drink in Austria in 1987, according to the company.

“The overwhelming feeling in these moments is one of sadness,” Red Bull said in a company-wide email to employees. “But soon sadness will give way to gratitude – gratitude for what he has changed, touched, encouraged and made possible for so many people. We will remain in touch with him respectfully and lovingly.”

In addition to its flagship product, Red Bull under Mateschitz is also known for its intensive marketing of extreme sports and events, including the record-breaking skydive from the edge of space in 2012. It also sponsors two Formula One teams.
