Ravens score against Buccaneers, takeaway: Baltimore delivers Tom Brady’s first three-game loss since 2002

Thursday night is the game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a 27-22 win in Tampa Bay, the Ravens went 5-3 while looking very much like the best team in the AFC North. Conversely, the Buccaneers, now 3-5 after their third straight loss, look like a team that didn’t have any legitimate chances in January.

Tampa Bay got off to a hot start, then faded over the final three quarters of the game. Baltimore’s pass-stealing made life miserable for Tom Brady, who passed Ben Roslisberger in the first half as the most fired quarterback in NFL history. It was a better night for the visiting quarterback as Lamar Jackson had 27 of 38 passes for two touchdowns. Jackson also had a run for 233 yards, which helped chew up more than 38 minutes of game time.

At halftime, the Ravens took the lead on touchdown passes from Jackson to Kenya Drake and Isaiah in the third quarter. Baltimore took a double-digit lead on Devin DuVernay’s 15-yard touchdown with 6:35 left, less than six minutes before the Buccaneers’ Ryan Succop field goal, the first of the half.

Brady briefly kept hope alive with a touchdown pass to Julio Jones. But the Ravens got the ensuing offside kick to seal the win while breaking Brady’s 302-game winning streak without three straight losses.

The Pirates went into the half with a 10-3 lead in the first 30 minutes of the game. Tampa Bay also got a decent first half from Brady, whose 44-yard finish on Chris Godwin gave Leonard Fournette a go-ahead touchdown midway through the first quarter.

Both teams were seriously injured Thursday night. The Ravens lost receivers Rashaw Bateman (foot) and Mark Andrews (shoulder) in the first three quarters of the game, then lost running back Gus Edwards (hamstring) in the fourth. The Bucs lost linebacker Shaquil Barrett in the second half. Barrett worried about torn Achilles tendon Via NFL Media.

Here’s a detailed look at what happened in Tampa.

Why the Ravens won

Baltimore dominated the ground while controlling the ball for more than two-thirds of the game. Led by Edwards and Drake, Baltimore dominated the court while overcoming their first-half errors in the red zone. The Ravens also got big contributions from Likely and Demarcus Robinson, who caught 12 of 15 targets for 141 yards.

On defense, the Ravens held off Brady and the Buccaneers for most of the final three quarters of the game. Justin Houston took a sip from the Fountain of Youth and recorded two sacks and two failed tackles. Houston and the rest of his teammates shut down Tampa Bay’s running game while keeping Brady on just 26 of 44 passes.

why the pirates lost

Tampa Bay’s offense completely dried up after the first quarter. The unit kicked five times in a row with little rest in their defense. While his running game didn’t do him any favors, Brady also failed to make a couple of third passes that would have kept the chain moving. Free throws, such as Funette’s false start with the Buccaneers trailing by 11 points and facing a fourth goal from the 3-yard line with 4:57 left, also plagued the Buccaneers’ offense.

While their offense didn’t help them, the Buccaneers’ defense failed to make a momentum-changing game in the second half. The unit was also unable to control Baltimore from the outside as the Ravens ran around and through the Tampa Bay defense.

A bright spot for the Buccaneers is the connection between Brady and Mike Evans. Evans caught six of 11 targets for 123 yards, including a 51-yard catch, the Buccaneers’ first of the second half.

turning point

Baltimore dominated the third quarter, beating Tampa Bay 14-0 and holding the ball for nearly 13 minutes. The Ravens’ offense started the half with a nine-game 77-yard drive that ended with Jackson’s touchdown pass to Drake for the game.

The Ravens defense forced a quick punt in Tampa Bay before Baltimore’s offense started 11 games of 80-yard drives, and Jackson’s beautiful touchdown pass hit with five seconds left in the third quarter. Interrupted the pass.

Gameplay

With Andrews and Bateman out, Likely stepped up and made a key touchdown catch that put the Ravens ahead forever. After only 10 catches in his first seven games of the season, the rookie tight end caught six passes for 77 yards on Thursday night.

Jackson asked some of his fans to speak for him after the win. Signs for the former league MVP hint at his current contract status, as Jackson is playing under his fifth-year rookie option after the Ravens were unable to agree on a long-term deal this past offseason.
