Elaine Frawleyassociate professor of biology at Rhodes College, received National Institutes of Health Academic research promotion awards in excess of $300,000. Her three-year grant begins in September. 1 Her project is titled “Role of Manganese Homeostasis in Nitric Oxide Stress Response in Salmonella Typhimurium.” Salmonella is a leading cause of diarrheal disease worldwide and foodborne illness in the United States, Frawley said. The body’s immune system uses nitric oxide as a chemical defense against bacterial infections. Increasing bacterial resistance to current antibiotics is a growing public health problem. The goal of Frawley’s research is to better understand the role of nitric oxide and how bacteria such as Salmonella evade them.
