Sherman, Texas (KXII) — Halloween marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating fire-ravaged Kelly Square in downtown Sherman.
Since that Halloween night, the businesses inside have been looking for other ways to stay afloat.
“The challenge is to let people know we’re here again,” said Beth Ward, co-owner of Wolverine Comics. “We have reopened.”
Beth Ward isn’t sure she’ll say the words again after the Kelly Square fire caused serious smoke damage to her comic shop.
“We’ve retired and opened the Kelly Square store with everything we have,” Ward said.
Other businesses, like Fubelli, never fully reopened.
TJ LaRosa is the owner of Kelly square and Fulbelli’s, which has turned to wine dinners and cakes and pies over the past year.
“It’s a struggle,” La Rosa said. “You know, obviously, there isn’t a restaurant that’s open, day in and day out, coming in to work. Believe it or not, we just got approval from the insurance company in September, so that’s a challenge in itself.”
As for the building, La Rosa said it will be demolished next week.
“Removing all the drywall, removing all the electrical equipment, pretty much turned the building into the shell of the building,” La Rosa said.
A year later, both business owners said it was people who kept them going.
“Our clients are fun,” Ward said. “They are happy to be here. We are happy to be here.”
“I just want to thank everyone for their support, phone calls,” La Rosa said. “I got a couple of texts this morning saying, ‘Hey. Hope all is well. It’s been a year. It’s a great neighborhood. Really.” anniversary.
