North Korea Unveils Kim Jong Un’s Daughter at Missile Site

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea unveiled the little-known daughter of its leader Kim Jong Un at a missile launch site, drawing keen attention to the fourth generation of members of the dynastic family that has ruled North Korea for more than a decade. Seven decades.

North Korean state media said Saturday that Kim Jong-un observed the launch The day before, he discussed the new ICBM with his wife Li Xuezhu, his “beloved daughter” and other officials. Kim said North Korea’s launch of the Hwasong-17 missile — the longest-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead — proved he had a credible weapon to deter a U.S.-led military threat.

The main Rodong Sinmun newspaper also published a series of photos showing Kim Jong-un and his daughter watching a flying missile in the distance. Other photos showed her with her hair brushed back, wearing a white coat and red shoes, walking hand in hand with her father past a giant missile atop a launch vehicle.

This is the first time North Korean state media has mentioned the daughter or published a photo of her. KCNA did not provide further details about her, such as her name and age.

Much of King’s private life remains unknown. But South Korean media reported that Kim married former singer Ri in 2009, and the couple had three children, born in 2010, 2013 and 2017.

It was unclear which child Kim Jong-un took to the launch site. But after a trip to Pyongyang in 2013, retired NBA star Dennis Rodman told the Guardian he had spent some “relaxing time by the sea” with Kim Jong-un and his family, holding Kim’s youngest daughter, Joo-ae.

The identity of Kim Jong-un’s children has drawn intense attention as the 38-year-old ruler has yet to publicly name a successor.

when he disappeared from public view For much of 2020, the global media was buzzing about who would succeed the impoverished but nuclear-armed nation amid unsubstantiated rumors about its health. Many observers said at the time that Kim Jong Un’s younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, would step in and run the country if her younger brother was incapacitated.

The Kim family has ruled North Korea with a strong personality centered on key family members since Kim Jong-un’s grandfather, Kim Il-sung, founded the country in 1948. The family’s so-called Paektu bloodline, named after North Korea’s most sacred mountain, allows only immediate family members to rule the country.

“It’s too early to speculate on the succession within the Kim regime,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. “However, publicly letting his wife and daughter Participation in what Kim Jong-un claims is a historically successful missile test, tying the family business that rules North Korea to the country’s missile program

“It’s probably an attempt to make up for Kim Jong-il’s lack of economic success to support his domestic legitimacy,” Easley said.

Cheong Seong-Chang, an analyst at South Korea’s private Sejong Institute, said if Kim Jong-un continued to take the daughter to important public events, it could be a sign that she would be Kim’s successor.

“Under the North Korean system, Kim Jong-un’s children will have the status of princes or princesses, just like in a dynasty. With Rodong Sinmun publishing her daughter’s photo, she is very fond of Kim Jong-un and Ri Sol-ju…she has nothing else Choice, can only live a special life,” Zheng said.

Other observers say Kim Jong-un taking his family to the missile test site shows his confidence in the successful launch of the weapons, or he may be trying to project an image of a normal leader that includes his family’s involvement in his affairs.

The revelation of the Kim family’s children took many North Korea watchers by surprise.

It was not until 2010, when the then 26-year-old Kim Jong-un was first mentioned publicly in state media as he held a series of high-level posts, before inheriting power the following year after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. Kim Jong Il was also 31 when he won key posts in the ruling Workers’ Party in 1973 – an appointment seen as a crucial step in succeeding his father, Kim Il Sung. In 1980, Kim Jong-il’s successor status was made public at the party congress.

But Cheong said Kim Jong Il privately told colleagues in 1992 that his third and youngest son, Kim Jong Un, would succeed him. Cheong said Kim Jong-un’s aunt and her husband defected to the United States and told him there was a song praising Kim Jong-un, whom Kim Jong-il said on his son’s eighth birthday as his successor.

“Kim Jong-un may have a daughter who he thinks is most like him as his successor,” Chung said.
