MCC staff, program honored at event

A MiraCosta College employee and one of the College’s programs was recently recognized at the San Diego North Economic Development Council’s annual awards luncheon. The event recognizes economic development achievements throughout North County. Sudarshan Shaunak, a MiraCosta College employee who helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses or start new ones, was honored at the event. Shaunak directs the North San Diego Small Business Development Center, a college-sponsored program supported by federal and state funding. The center has helped people start more than 650 new businesses, create or keep more than 3,700 jobs, secure $168 million in financing, and win more than $616 million in government contracts. Shaunak’s team has conducted more than 120 workshops and provides free one-on-one guidance to more than 1,000 business owners each year. He also serves on the MiraCosta College Foundation Board of Directors. The second award went to MiraCosta’s Technical Career Institute for its Cooperative Education Retraining and Training Pilot Program, which received $3.5 million in funding for a job training program for disadvantaged and unemployed adults. Harbor Freight Tools has announced that it will be opening a new store at 170 Knoll Road this winter. The official opening date will be announced closer to the opening. Construction has already begun on the site, using local workers and companies. The store is expected to bring 25 to 30 new jobs to the community, including sales and logistics executives, senior assistants, sales assistants and seasonal opportunities.
