Buckingham Palace has released a photo of Queen Elizabeth II’s final resting place in St Petersburg. She was buried at St George’s Chapel in Windsor on Monday.
An accounting stone engraved with the late monarch’s name was installed in the King George VI Memorial Chapel attached to the main church on Monday night after her family attended a private service.
Hand-carved from Belgian black marble, the slate is inlaid with brass letters bearing the names of her parents – King George VI and Queen Elizabeth – followed by the late Queen and her husband Prince Philip. . The garter star separates the two royal couples, with the year of birth and death engraved next to each name.
All four royals are members of the Order of the Garter, the country’s highest order of knighthood, dating back to the Middle Ages and the reign of King Edward III. Members of the group, hand-picked by the monarch in recognition of individual contributions to the country, include several members of the royal family, former prime ministers and other senior figures. The spiritual home of the order is St. George Church.
The Queen held a well-planned state funeral at Westminster Abbey in London, attended by leaders from around the world. More than 26 million people in Britain tuned in to watch the funeral on Monday, the first time a British monarch was televised.
When the Queen’s 73-year-old husband Prince Philip died in April 2021, his coffin was initially placed in the royal vault below St Petersburg. George’s, it was there until it could be relocated to the Memorial Chapel after the Queen’s death. The Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, died in 2002 and her ashes were buried in the church.
Royal residences including Windsor Castle have been closed since the Queen’s death on September 8. But when the castle reopens on September 29, the public will be able to visit the Queen’s resting place.
Several areas within the Royal Residence reopened to visitors on Thursday, including the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland, according to the Royal Collection Trust. However, Buckingham Palace’s State Hall and Royal Mews, which opened in the summer, will not return this year.
In addition, the trust added that special exhibitions at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will not reopen to the public.
The photo of the ledger stone comes a day after Buckingham Palace released a new portrait of King Charles III and the monarch’s iconic red box.
This photo, taken by PA Images in the UK, shows Charles at work last week.
“This photo was taken in Buckingham Palace’s 18th Century Room last week and shows His Majesty the King in the King’s Red Box performing government duties,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
The red box contains important documents from UK government ministers and representatives of the Commonwealth and other territories.
“The documents were sent to the king from the office of the private secretary, wherever he was, in a locked red courier box,” it added.
The background behind the new monarch is a black-and-white photograph of the late monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh, a Christmas gift to the couple from King George VI in 1951.

At the request of the king, the royal family will continue to mourn for a week after the state funeral. According to reports, Charles III has now returned to Scotland with the queen to mourn privately.
