A new robotic procedure is saving the lives of many lung cancer patients. Often, lung cancer is fatal because it is so difficult to detect in its early stages. According to CBS, doctors at Main Line Health say that robotic technology can detect lung cancer early and treat it at the same time.
The new technique, dubbed “robotic bronchoscopy,” allows doctors to use image guidance and tiny tubes to reach the far ends of the lungs.

a special technique
Perhaps the most special feature of this technique is that if traces of cancer are found in the lungs, doctors can treat them while the patient is under general anesthesia.
“When they wake up, we say you’ve got lung cancer and it’s been treated. That’s all the difference,” says Dr. Patrick Ross from Main Line Health told CBS it was “revolutionary”.

According to doctors, this robotic technology may be especially important for people at high risk of lung cancer. Ex-smokers who could take advantage of the technology’s benefits don’t have access to it, according to a new report. Trends also show that young non-smokers are also developing lung cancer today.
Factors such as air pollution can increase a person’s chances of developing lung cancer. Besides smoking, another common cause of lung cancer is radon, a radioactive gas that’s formed when radioactive metals break down naturally in rocks and soil.

In India, about 70,000 cases of lung cancer are reported. These numbers are expected to increase to more than 81,000 among men and 30,000 among women by 2025. This technique could be very useful in limiting lung cancer-related mortality.
