Landmark research by Gatepoint Research reports business leaders’ most pressing IT automation priorities, the current state of their automation goals, and uncovers key trends and strategies.

According to the survey, IT operations management, cloud operations and IT service management are the top IT functions that leaders are eager to automate. 45% of IT leaders see automation as the core of their IT operations strategy, with cloud operations a close second at 42% and IT service management (ITSM) at 34%.

Report results confirm that nearly all leaders are involved in automation projects. Twenty-nine percent of respondents responded that increasing automation in the coming year is extremely important—even critical. For another 42%, automation is almost critical.

“As businesses navigate a challenging macroeconomic environment, IT leaders are turning to automation to increase business resiliency and accelerate strategic goals,” said Vijay Kulkar, CEO of Resolve Systems. “In an increasingly complex environment, IT automation is fundamental to simplifying and coordinating day-to-day business delivery. Rather than asking ‘why automate?’ the focus has shifted to where IT process automation can be implemented to generate impact on business outcomes, customer experience and employee satisfaction The fastest and most impactful place.”

Other findings of the report include:

  • IT talent shortage remains the biggest challenge in implementing automation. Over 76% of respondents cited talent and staffing shortages as their number one challenge.
  • Enterprise-wide automation has arrived. Currently, infrastructure provisioning, testing, incident resolution, and proactive maintenance prioritize the speed of dedicated intelligent automation.
  • Efficiency gain. Saving time, improving capabilities, automating scripts, controlling costs, and driving self-service were highly rated by respondents as the top benefits of automation.
  • IT automation is being deployed today: 66% say they are deploying IT automation to reduce costs, troubleshoot and speed up service delivery. 44% are using IT automation to provide self-service to end users. 29% said they are using unattended automation.
