National Sleep Foundation and Consumer Technology Association Publish Updated Standards for Wearable Sleep Monitors

Washington, October 14 January 2022 /PRNewswire/ — National Sleep Foundation (NSF) and Consumer Technology Association® (CTA) Published ANSI/CTA/NSF-2052.1-A Definition and Characteristics of Wearable Sleep Monitors. Originally published in 2016, this updated standard further defines the terms and functions of sleep measurement devices.

As a leader in sleep technology, NSF identified need for a standard for wearable sleep monitors, developed in partnership with the CTA Definition and Characteristics of Wearable Sleep Monitors. The updated standard defines terms to describe sleep states and defines the capabilities required for devices that measure sleep behavior. The standard focuses only on consumer products and does not address functionality in medical devices.

“Our ongoing collaboration with CTA and innovative industry stakeholders aims to inform the development and realization of everyday products — technologies that make sense for consumers and help people get enough quality sleep,” he said. John Lopos, CEO of the National Science Foundation. “Sleep technology has incredible potential to improve consumers’ sleep and health, and at NSF, we’re seeing a growing range of uses and settings for consumer devices.”

“As digital health transitions from novelty to necessity, enhanced standards can help increase consumer adoption of technology and help improve health outcomes around the world,” said Kerry HarrisonDirector of Technology and Standards at CTA.

NSF’s sleep technology goals recognize and encourage efforts to rapidly integrate sleep science and insights into accessible health products and services. NSF is committed to making science-based sleep technology more accessible and convenient, so anyone and everyone can be their best sleeping self®.
