Minister confirms Qatar’s commitment to investing in science, technology and innovation

Buthaina bint Ali al-Jabr al-Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education, affirmed Qatar’s commitment to investing in science, technology and innovation and its keenness to develop international cooperation in these areas to address the challenges and risks facing the world today, including climate change, Covid-19 -19 and other crises.
She highlighted the country’s efforts and achievements in funding regional and international scientific research and innovation, the possibilities it offers to attract researchers and experts, and what it is doing to enhance and develop the scientific capabilities and talents of young people .
The announcements were made during the Minister of Education and Higher Education’s participation in the Science and Technology Ministers Roundtable on the sidelines of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology Society Forum in Kyoto, Japan, which will continue until tomorrow.
Since its inception more than 16 years ago, the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has invested more than $1.4 billion in more than 4,700 research projects in the country, as well as research partnerships with 54 different countries around the world, she revealed.
The Minister highlighted the pioneering role played by the Qatar Research Development and Innovation Council (QRDI), established in 2018.
QRDI has formulated a 10-year research, development and innovation strategy to 2030 as a fundamental pillar for building a knowledge-based economy, making Qatar a regional research and innovation hub.
The committee focuses on five priority areas such as energy, health, resource sustainability, society and digital technologies.
During his participation in the 19th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology Society Forum in Kyoto, Japan, the minister met Qatari students who received scholarships to study at Japanese universities.
The minister also reviewed the academic situation of the students, listened to their comments, suggestions and requirements, and advised them to study hard and persevere to obtain the highest degree, which qualifies them to serve the much-needed Qatar. Its citizens are in scientific disciplines.
The annual forum aims to strengthen cooperation among countries in research, technology, science and innovation, and to discuss technology transfer mechanisms and the role of science, technology and innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. )
