A judge on Thursday sentenced the Michigan governor to the longest sentence to date in a Michigan kidnapping conspiracy. Gretchen Whitmer sentenced three men for an early alliance with a leader of the program before the FBI disbanded it in 2020. Pete Musico was sentenced to at least 12 years in prison, followed by his son-in-law Joe Morrison at 10 and Paul Bellar at 7.
They had no direct role in the conspiracy but were members of a paramilitary organization that accepted adam foxIn a separate case in federal court, he could face life in prison.
Morrison, Musico and Bellar will be eligible for parole after serving their sentences.

In a recorded video, Whitmer urged Jackson County Judge Thomas Wilson to “deliver judgments based on the severity of the damage they have done to our democracy.”
“The plot to kidnap and kill Michigan’s sitting governor is a threat to democracy itself,” Whitmer said, adding that she now scans crowds for threats and fears “the fate of everyone close to me.”

Following the convictions of Fox and Barry Croft Jr. In August, Whitmer said the verdict proved that “violence and threats have no place in our politics, and those who seek to divide us will be held accountable.”
Wilson presided over the first convictions in state court, following the conspiracy convictions of four others in federal court. Fox and Croft have been described as captains of an incredible scheme to snatch Whitmer from her vacation home in an attempt to spark an American Civil War known as the “boogaloo”.

In Michigan, people convicted of more than one crime are often sentenced to prison at the same time. But Wilson took the unusual step of running consecutive sentences for Musico and Morrison, making their minimum stays longer. In addition to being convicted of supporting terrorism, the three men were also convicted of firearms offenses and gang membership.
Musico, 45, Morrison, 28, and Bellar, 24, are all members of Wolverine Watch. The trio conducted gun training with Fox in rural Jackson County and shared his distaste for Whitmer, police and public officials, especially as COVID-19 restrictions disrupted the economy and sparked armed Capitol protests and antigovernment militancy after.

But defense attorneys argued the trio severed ties with Fox before Whitmer’s plot came into focus in late summer 2020; Bellar moved to South Carolina in July. The trio also did not travel with Fox to find the governor’s adopted home or attend a vital training session at a “shooting range” in Luther City, Michigan.
“Mr. Baylor had no knowledge of any plot to kidnap the governor,” attorney Andrew Kirkpatrick said again in a court filing last week.
However, the jury swiftly returned a guilty verdict in October after hearing nine days of testimony, largely by key FBI informant Dan Chappelle and federal agents. The jury agreed with prosecutors that Wolverine Watchers constituted a criminal gang.
Separately, Fox and Croft could face life in prison within two weeks in federal court in Grand Rapids. Two men who pleaded guilty were given substantial breaks: Taigabin Free after 2 1/2 years of imprisonment, while Caleb Franks Sentenced to four years in prison.Brandon Caserta and Daniel Harris acquitted by a jury.
When the plot was foiled, Whitmer blamed then-President Donald Trump, saying he had “comforted those who sow fear, hatred and division.” In August, 19 months after leaving office, Trump said the kidnapping plan was a “sham deal.”
