Five people were killed in a shooting at an apartment complex in suburban Toronto Sunday night, police said.

Police responded to a shooting at a building in Vaughan, a city north of Toronto, at about 7:20 p.m., York Regional Police Chief Jim McSwain said at a news conference.

McSwain said police found “a horrific scene of many victims dying”. One survivor who was shot was taken to a hospital where they are expected to survive, he said.

An emergency response team was clearing the building so displaced residents could return to their homes.

“What we’re trying to do is make sure that the residents who live in this building can come back as soon as possible. It’s going to take some time,” MacSween said, noting how big the building is.

He said police were still notifying the families of the victims, so their identities have not been released.

The suspect’s motive has not been released, and police have not said what led to the shooting.

Officer Laura Nicole told CNN The incident was “the worst call I’ve seen in my entire career”.

Nicole said at an earlier news conference that the victims appeared to be from more than one apartment unit.
