Evelyn Larrubia joins Tech and Business Research Editor

We are pleased to announce that Evelyn Larrubia will join The Washington Post as technology and business investigations editor, leading a team of journalists on the impact of money and technology on our government and the world Provide inspiring news coverage.

Evelyn brings years of experience in editorial responsibility and investigative journalism, often built on creative analysis of raw data. She joins us after three years as chief investigative editor at Markup, a nonprofit newsroom founded in 2018 to investigate how powerful institutions are using technology to shape society. There, Evelyn built an investigative team that quickly did groundbreaking work, including in-depth coverage of Google and Amazon’s self-dealing. The latter won the Gerald Loeb Award last month for personal finance and consumer reporting, which Congress has cited in its efforts to hold tech companies accountable. Evelyn teamed up with data journalist Emmanuel Martinez (now The Post himself) to produce a report uncovering bias in mortgage approval algorithms, leading to a historic multi-agency initiative to combat discrimination in mortgage lending. In addition to Loeb, Evelyn’s team has won the National Association of Black Journalists Best Practice Award, the Professional Journalists Association New America Award and two Edward R. Murrow National Awards this year alone.

Prior to Markup, Evelyn was executive editor of the public radio station “Marketplace” and led news and investigations at KPCC, NPR’s news station in Los Angeles. She also worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times for more than a decade, where she was part of a team that produced an award-winning series on the issues surrounding court-appointed elder custody. The disturbing rise of the for-profit industry. She began her career at the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel in South Florida, writing about crime, hurricanes and deadly cosmetic surgery. She also produced an investigative series on pawn shops, which won a Livingston Award. 2017, CCNMA: California Latino Reporter named her Latino Reporter of the Year.

The child of Cuban exiles, Evelyn grew up in Miami and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of South Florida. In 2010, she was a Knight Fellow at Stanford University. She will initially work in Los Angeles, where she uses her free time to hike in the urban wilderness and check on her son, who is expected to graduate from college in the spring.

Please join us in welcoming Evelyn to The Post. Her first day is November. 28.
