KANNAPOLIS – Greendale Tropical Fish and Supplies at Mt. Goldfish Road. Mitchell was severely damaged by a fire early Friday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and authorities have not released information on the extent of the damage.

The initial siren went off just before 7am, and four siren fires eventually occurred, Mt. Mutual Aid. Mitchell from Kannapolis, Coldwater, rimer, Bostian Heights, Landis, China Grove, Atwell, Enochville, Rockwell Rural, Salisbury, Mt. Happy, Cabalus and Odell.

At one point, firefighters airstruck the fire from a ladder truck in an attempt to extinguish the flames from above the structure and ventilate the exterior walls.

Jeff Eury, who lives across the street and has been there for 24 years, said he didn’t hear any sirens but woke up to the hum of a fire truck’s engine.

“I looked out and wondered what was going on,” he said. He said he believed the store might have been around for 50 years, and while he was not optimistic, other neighbors and people who commented on social media talked about being there with their parents and grandparents, saying the store is a lifelong community staple.

“She likes those fish,” Yuri said of his master. “She can tell you anything you want to know about them.” Eury said he knew the community would be shocked to learn the business was damaged and hoped no one was hurt.

Firefighters at the scene said no one was inside the home when the fire broke out and there were no reports of injuries, but it was unclear if any animals survived. Officials say it is unlikely.

Eury said an attempt to install a hydrant in the area a few years ago was unsuccessful as there was only one nearby.

“I don’t know why,” he said. Tankers were called to deal with the early morning fire.

Firefighters were still at the scene until noon.
