Crime-fighting technique after man shot in face leads to arrest

Memphis, Tennessee — More high-tech tools are helping police tackle Memphis’ rising crime problem.

The MPD said ShotSpotter helped police uncover the fatal shootings in Park and Prescott last week that led to the arrest of 69-year-old Rickey London.

Block 3400 Park Avenue

Shortly after the gunshots, Robert Brown was found shot in the face in a vehicle outside a house in the 3400 block of Park Avenue, police said.

Investigators said surveillance cameras in the area showed London getting into an altercation with Brown before the shooting and then getting into a silver hatchback with a female driver.

When police were at the scene, they spotted the same silver hatchback and the woman in surveillance footage from a convenience store across the street.

The woman told police she was in the room in London when the shooting happened, and London told her he shot Brown because he threatened him and he believed Brown was reaching for a gun.

MPD started using ShotSpotter technology last year. Police did not say how many people have been arrested so far.

Last week, live Crime Center surveillance cameras helped police arrest a suspected car theft in downtown Memphis in about ten minutes.

Princeton Vaughn, 31, was caught on camera as he tried to break into a car in Gayoso near Danny Thomas, police said.

Vaugh was charged with attempted theft and a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
