Business Spotlight: Reflections | Eyes on Racine County

Reflections is a new full-service salon business in the Union Grove area. Although new to the clientele, owner Kara Bulgrin is no stranger to the industry. With decades of stylist experience and deep family ties to the barbering industry, the owner is happy to welcome back old faces and connect with new clients.

Generations invested in the industry

“I’m a fourth-generation hairdresser,” Bulgreen said.

In 1952, Bulgreen’s grandmother became Wisconsin’s first female master barber. Ann Beecher and her husband own Beecher’s Barber Shop in Kansasville, Wisconsin. She was known as “The Lady Barber of Kansasville,” according to her obituary.

Bulgrin inherited not only her grandmother’s estate, but also her father, mother, uncle and aunt. Bulgrin and her two sisters, both barbers and beauticians, are part of the family affair.

“I grew up spinning in a chair in a barbershop,” she says.

next generation salon

In November 2000, her father opened Next Generation Salon in the Union Grove area.

“It’s a next-generation salon because we’re the next generation, my sisters and me,” she said.

Carla took over the business from her father in 2002.

She kept the name Next Generation Salon “because that’s really me,” she explains.

The company was sold in 2013 because Bulgrin wanted a career in nursing. However, in 2016, she rediscovered her passion when she started working as a barber/stylist again. She’s been back since then, but now, they’ve switched gears and opened a new salon with a new name.

“The owner here (at the Lincolnwood Drive location) decided she didn’t want to own it anymore, so she pretty much closed, and then we opened four days later,” Bulgrin said of her new business.

look back again

“When I came back this time, I wasn’t really sure about the name,” Bulgreen said.

While her father’s (and ultimately her) salon is focused on the next generation, Kara’s new salon is focused on reflection.

“I was reflecting and talking to a couple of my friends about it. My best friend said, ‘Why don’t you name it Reflections,'” she said.

The name has been handed down, and it serves a dual purpose. Customers who know their family’s story know the treasured history of the salon today.

Clients who visit the salon also see their own reflection when they look in the mirror. They can also observe and reflect on their own transformations.

Bulgreen said she’s not in business for the money, but to “make people leave here feeling better about themselves.”
