The Phillies erased a five-point deficit early on against Justin Verlander and won on JT Realmuto’s 10th inning homer. Philadelphia is now just three wins away from a third World Series title in franchise history (also in 1980 and 2008). Meanwhile, Houston will try to play the series at home Saturday night.
Historically, teams that win Game 1 in a best-of-seven series continue to win the series 64% of the time, even though Game 1 winners have won the past four World Series and the past 16 13 times in the World Series. The series was far from over, but the Phillies put themselves in a good position by stealing Game 1 in a 5-0 loss to Verlander.

Houston lost home-court advantage in the series and lost a game behind the team’s ace. Winning Game 2 was imperative to avoid a 2-0 series deficit when returning to Philadelphia.

All signs point to the Phillies in Game 2. They have an ace on Wheeler’s mound, and during the regular season, they were more efficient offense against lefties than righties. That said, Valdez is no ordinary southpaw, and it’s hard for me to believe these Astros would lose two games in a row at home. Houston was a rookie in Game 2.
