The Ongole breed of cattle that has bred between the Gundlakamma and Musi rivers in the Prakasam region for centuries is now threatened with extinction in its place of origin.

To reverse this trend, the Andhra Pradesh Livestock Development Agency (APLDA) has drawn up an action plan to actively adopt in vitro fertilization (IVF)/embryo transfer (ET) technology in and around the state-run Chadalawada farm to produce high yields Products According to the agency’s CEO, M. Srinivasa Rao, dairy cows.

As a result, veterinarians within a 50-kilometer radius of the farm have been entrusted with the task of using advanced technology to reproduce high-quality female germplasm at a faster rate, leading farmers to produce the Ongole cattle breed, he said.

“Government farms in Chadalawada will serve as node farms to build confidence among farmers to raise quality calves quickly,” said its deputy director B. Ravi in a statement with Hinduism Sunday.

Fresh or frozen high genetic value (HGM) Ongole bull semen will be arranged from state farms in the region, including Chintaladevi in the neighbouring SPSR Nellore district.

The parliamentary constituencies chosen to promote the technology are Ongole, SN Padu, Kondepi, Chirala and Parchur in the undivided Prakasam district.

Every veterinary physician in the region shall promote the production of at least one heifer of high genetic value through the ET program in his or her jurisdiction within one year.

He added that the technology will also be used in the next phase to produce high-yielding Murrah buffalo calves.
