The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office recently added a new drone to its force. The agency started using drones about 2 months ago. “The technology it’s using is way beyond what we’ve had before,” said Jon Norton, commander of ACSO’s drone unit. The sheriff’s office also has four smaller drones, but Norton said, The new drone is bigger and more tech-heavy. He said it had infrared technology, a bigger zoom, louder sound reinforcement and better spotlights. He said it could also track cars and people. According to Norton, drones can be used in different cases, including large events or finding missing persons or suspects. “We can actually monitor this better because of the zoom, because of the time we can stay in the air, because of the tracking capabilities,” Norton said. “If we do have an incident, we can pick out the problem and track that, Even if it gets into the car and gets out, we can continue to follow the car.” Norton said the sheriff’s office has used drones in major cases. He said the bird’s-eye view would help delegates. “I believe it’s going to be a game-changer because it provides a completely different perspective on what we’re trying to get into,” Norton said. “We go into a neighborhood, or we can go into any type of area or situation, and we didn’t have that bird’s-eye view before. We couldn’t see everything around us, we couldn’t see anything that was waiting for us and now we can.” Norton says it also makes it more secure. “It makes the delegates safer, and at the same time, I feel like it makes the public safer because we can actually get out there and fix things faster before they get out of hand,” Norton said.
